Terms of Use
Last updated: 30th September 2026
These terms of use ("Terms") apply to your use of the CheckIt website at checkitglossary.com, any of its sub-domains, and the CheckIt mobile apps (together, the "Service"). Please read them carefully, as they affect your legal rights.
Sections 1 to 16 apply to everyone. Section 17 and Schedule 1 also apply to schools and other organisations that buy a CheckIt licence.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. About us
1.1 The Service is operated by Checkit Education Ltd ("CheckIt", "we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales with company number 17435561.
1.2 You can contact us by email at hello@checkitglossary.com.
1.3 In these Terms, "you" means the person using the Service. If you are using the Service on behalf of a school or other organisation, "you" also includes that organisation.
2. Who can use CheckIt
2.1 CheckIt is designed for students, teachers, tutors, schools, parents and anyone else interested in learning.
2.2 You must be 13 or over to create your own account. Children under 13 may only use CheckIt through an account set up by their school or organisation.
2.3 If you are under 18, you must have your parent or guardian's permission to buy a subscription. Parents and guardians are responsible for purchases made by their children.
3. Accounts
3.1 You must make sure the details you give us when you register, and at any time afterwards, are accurate and kept up to date. You can update your details from your account settings.
3.2 Keep your password confidential. Accounts are personal to you and must not be shared. You are responsible for activity on your account unless it results from our failure to keep the Service secure.
3.3 Tell us straight away at hello@checkitglossary.com if you think someone else has accessed your account.
3.4 If we have reason to believe there is, or is likely to be, misuse of the Service or a breach of security, we may require you to change your password or temporarily suspend your account.
4. School and organisation accounts
4.1 If your school or organisation has bought a CheckIt licence, your access is provided under that licence (see section 17). Your school or organisation controls your account. It may create, manage, suspend or remove accounts, and your access will end if its licence ends or you leave the organisation.
5. Subscriptions and payment
5.1 Some parts of the Service are free. Other parts require a paid subscription. Prices, what is included and the billing period are shown on our pricing page and at checkout before you pay. Payments on our website are processed securely by Stripe.
5.2 Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period, and we will charge the payment method you used, until you cancel. For annual subscriptions, we will remind you before your subscription renews. If we change the price of your subscription, we will tell you in advance and the new price will apply from your next renewal. You can cancel before then if you do not want to continue.
5.3 Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from your account settings (or, for in-app subscriptions, from your Apple or Google account settings). Your subscription will continue until the end of the period you have paid for and will not renew. We do not give refunds for partly used periods, except where required by law or under clause 5.5.
5.4 Your 14-day right to cancel (consumers only). If you are a consumer buying a subscription through our website, you normally have 14 days from the date of purchase to change your mind. However, the Service gives you access to digital content straight away. When you buy, we will ask you to agree that access starts immediately and to acknowledge that, once you start using the paid content, you lose your right to cancel. If you do not start using the paid content within the 14 days, you can cancel for a full refund by contacting us.
5.5 If something goes wrong. Nothing in these Terms affects your legal rights as a consumer. If the paid Service is faulty or not as described, you may be entitled to a repair, replacement or a refund. For detailed information, visit Citizens Advice.
5.6 In-app purchases. If you subscribe through the Apple App Store or Google Play, your purchase is handled by Apple or Google under their terms, including their payment, renewal, cancellation and refund policies. Please contact them for refunds.
5.7 Clauses 5.4 to 5.6 apply only to consumers. School and organisation licences are also covered by section 17.
6. Our content and how you can use it
6.1 All content on the Service, including the glossary definitions, model sentences, examples, command word guidance, text, graphics, data, databases, page layout and underlying code (the "Content"), belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by copyright, database rights, trade marks and other intellectual property rights.
6.2 We give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use the Content for your own educational and professional purposes, including studying, teaching, tutoring, lesson preparation and professional development.
6.3 As part of this, you may reproduce individual entries (for example, a single definition or command word explanation) in your own teaching materials, presentations or study notes, provided you acknowledge CheckIt as the source.
6.4 Except as allowed above, or with our prior written permission, you must not:
(a) reproduce, copy, store or transmit the Content, or any substantial part of it, in any form or by any means, including by storing it in a retrieval system, database or shared drive;
(b) systematically copy or compile the Content, or extract or re-use all or a substantial part of any CheckIt database;
(c) republish, sell, license or otherwise commercially exploit the Content, or include it in any product or resource offered to others;
(d) use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access, collect or copy the Content; or
(e) use the Content to train, fine-tune, test or develop any artificial intelligence or machine learning model, or add it to any dataset or AI retrieval system.
6.5 Nothing in these Terms gives you any right to use our name, logo or trade marks, or restricts anything you are allowed to do by law.
6.6 If you send us suggestions or feedback about the Service, we may use them freely without any obligation to you.
7. Acceptable use
7.1 You must not use the Service:
(a) in any way that breaks the law or these Terms;
(b) in any way that damages, disables or overloads the Service, or interferes with anyone else's use of it;
(c) to try to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems;
(d) to introduce viruses or other harmful material; or
(e) to copy, modify, reverse engineer or decompile any part of the Service's software, except as permitted by law.
8. About our educational content
8.1 Our Content is prepared and reviewed by an experienced team, and we work hard to make sure it is accurate and up to date. However, it is provided for general educational support only. It is not a substitute for teaching, and we cannot guarantee that it is complete, error-free or matches every course or exam specification.
8.2 CheckIt is independent. Unless we clearly say otherwise, references to exam boards, organisations or publications are for information only and do not mean they are affiliated with or endorse CheckIt. Any names or trade marks belong to their respective owners.
8.3 Comments, reviews and recommendations about CheckIt from individuals are their own views and do not represent the views of any organisation they work for or are associated with.
8.4 If you spot an error, please tell us at hello@checkitglossary.com so we can correct it.
9. Availability of the Service
9.1 We aim to keep the Service available and secure, but we cannot guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted or free from errors or viruses. We may need to suspend access for maintenance, updates or for reasons beyond our control. You are responsible for protecting your own devices.
9.2 We may update and change the Service from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the curriculum or to improve it. If we make a change that significantly reduces what you get from a paid subscription or licence, we will tell you, and you may cancel and receive a refund for any period you have paid for but not received.
9.3 We may stop providing the Service or any part of it. If we do, we will give paying customers reasonable notice and refund any fees paid for a period after the Service ends.
10. Links to other websites
10.1 The Service may contain links to other websites. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content. A link does not mean we endorse the website or those who run it.
11. Our liability to you
11.1 Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.
11.2 If you are a consumer: we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these Terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable. We only provide the Service for domestic, private and educational use, and we are not liable for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity. If digital content we supply damages a device or digital content belonging to you because we did not use reasonable care and skill, we will either repair the damage or pay you compensation up to the value of the device.
11.3 If you are a school, organisation or other business user: to the extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied conditions, warranties and terms, and we will not be liable for any loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill, anticipated savings or data, or for any indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability to you arising out of or in connection with the Service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in that period and £100.
11.4 We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control.
12. Suspending or ending your use
12.1 You can stop using the Service at any time. To close your account, use your account settings or email us at hello@checkitglossary.com. If you have a subscription, please cancel it as described in clause 5.3 first.
12.2 We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, or if we are required to by law. Where reasonable, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put things right. If we close your account for reasons other than your breach of these Terms, we will refund any fees paid for a period you will not receive.
12.3 Closing or suspending your account does not affect any legal rights you have.
13. Privacy and cookies
13.1 Our Privacy Policy explains how we use your personal data, and our Cookie Policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies.
14. Changes to these Terms
14.1 We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the law or to the Service. The date at the top shows when they were last updated. If we make significant changes that affect you, we will tell you in advance by email or through the Service. If you do not agree to the changes, you can stop using the Service and cancel any subscription before they take effect.
15. Complaints
15.1 If you are unhappy with anything, please contact us at hello@checkitglossary.com. We will acknowledge your complaint promptly and aim to resolve it as quickly as possible.
16. General
16.1 We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to another organisation, for example if our business is sold. We will tell you if this happens and make sure the transfer does not reduce your rights. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms to anyone else.
16.2 These Terms (together with any Order under section 17) are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
16.3 Nobody else has any rights under these Terms. The Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 does not apply.
16.4 If a court finds any part of these Terms invalid or unenforceable, the rest will continue to apply.
16.5 If we delay in enforcing these Terms, we can still enforce them later.
16.6 These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you can bring legal proceedings in the courts of England and Wales, or, if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in the courts of your home country. If you are a business, the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
17. School and organisation licences
This section applies when a school, college, trust or other organisation (the "School") buys a CheckIt licence.
17.1 Orders. A licence starts when the School completes its purchase on our website (the "Order"). The Order sets out the number of users, the licence period and the price. If the Order conflicts with these Terms, the Order takes priority. The person placing the Order confirms they are authorised to do so on the School's behalf.
17.2 Licence. During the licence period, the School's authorised staff and pupils ("Authorised Users") may use the Service and the Content on the terms in section 6. The School may link to CheckIt from its own systems, such as its virtual learning environment, but section 6.4 still applies.
17.3 Payment. Fees are paid in advance, by card or other payment method offered at checkout, through our payment provider Stripe. A receipt is emailed to the School when payment is taken. If the School cannot pay online, it can contact us to discuss other arrangements, which we may agree at our discretion.
17.4 Renewal and cancellation. School licences renew automatically at the end of each licence period for the same period, and we will charge the payment method on file, until the School cancels. We will email the School's account contact at least 30 days before an annual licence renews, with the renewal price. The School can cancel at any time from its account settings; the licence will then continue until the end of the period already paid for and will not renew. We do not give refunds for partly used periods, except under clauses 9.2, 9.3, 12.2 or Schedule 1.
17.5 The School's responsibilities. The School will:
(a) only give access to Authorised Users, and remove accounts for people who leave;
(b) make sure Authorised Users use the Service in line with these Terms;
(c) make sure it has a lawful basis for sharing pupil and staff personal data with us, and tell pupils and parents about it in its privacy notice; and
(d) keep login details secure.
17.6 Ending the licence. Either party may end a licence immediately by notice if the other seriously breaches these Terms and does not put it right within 30 days of being asked to. When a licence ends, access for Authorised Users ends, and we will deal with personal data as set out in Schedule 1.
17.7 Data protection. When we process personal data about Authorised Users for the School, the School is the controller and we are its processor. Schedule 1 applies to that processing and forms part of these Terms.
17.8 Liability. Clause 11.3 applies to the School.
Schedule 1: Data processing terms
These terms apply where we process personal data as a processor on behalf of a School under section 17. They are intended to meet the requirements of Article 28 of the UK GDPR. Words such as "controller", "processor", "personal data" and "personal data breach" have the meanings given in the UK GDPR.
S1.1 Details of the processing
| Subject matter and duration | Providing the Service to the School for the licence period, and up to 90 days afterwards for deletion |
| Nature and purpose | Creating and managing user accounts; providing access to the Service and Content; showing usage and progress information to users and the School; support; security |
| Types of personal data | Names; school email addresses; usernames; year group and class; account role; usage and progress data within the Service; technical data such as IP address and device type |
| Categories of data subjects | The School's pupils and staff who are Authorised Users |
S1.2 Our obligations. We will:
(a) process the personal data only on the School's documented instructions, which are these Terms, the Order and the School's use of the Service's settings, unless the law requires otherwise (in which case we will tell the School first, unless the law prevents it);
(b) tell the School if we think an instruction breaks data protection law;
(c) make sure everyone we authorise to process the personal data is bound by confidentiality;
(d) take appropriate technical and organisational security measures, as required by Article 32 of the UK GDPR;
(e) help the School, taking into account the nature of the processing, to respond to requests from individuals exercising their data protection rights, and to meet its obligations on security, personal data breaches and data protection impact assessments;
(f) notify the School without undue delay, and in any event within 48 hours, after becoming aware of a personal data breach affecting the School's personal data, and give it the information it reasonably needs;
(g) at the end of the licence, delete the personal data within 90 days, or return it first if the School asks us to in writing before the licence ends, unless the law requires us to keep it; and
(h) make available the information reasonably needed to show that we meet these obligations, and allow for and contribute to audits (no more than once a year, on 30 days' notice, unless there has been a personal data breach or a regulator requires it).
S1.3 Sub-processors. The School gives us general authorisation to use sub-processors. Our current sub-processors are listed in our Privacy Policy. Before we add or replace a sub-processor, we will update that list and email the School's account contact at least 14 days in advance (or, where an urgent change is needed for security or to keep the Service running, as soon as we reasonably can). The School may object on reasonable data protection grounds. If we cannot resolve the objection, the School may cancel its licence and receive a refund of fees for the remaining licence period. We will put in place written terms with each sub-processor giving the same level of protection as this Schedule, and we remain responsible for them.
S1.4 Location and international transfers. We will host and back up the personal data in the United Kingdom. We will only transfer the personal data outside the UK (for example, where a sub-processor provides remote technical support) where it is protected by a UK adequacy decision or other appropriate safeguards under UK data protection law.
S1.5 Anonymised data. The School instructs us to create aggregated, anonymised statistics from use of the Service, which do not identify any individual or School. We may use these to maintain and improve the Service.
S1.6 The School's obligations. The School is responsible for making sure it has a lawful basis for the processing, and that its instructions comply with data protection law.
